“There is a common assumption about youth which is: Youth is about youth,” says American photographer Collier Schorr. “But that isn’t really true. Youth is really about the past. Youth is not the pool that young men gaze adoringly into; it is the pool that old men gaze in, in order to measure the distance their bodies have travelled.”
Schorr, who has shot the likes of Vincent Gallo and Sergei Polunin for Another Man, as well as Naomi Scott, Chloë Grace Moretz and Ruth Negga for AnOther Magazine, is launching a book today titled Paul’s Book.
Focusing on Paul Hameline, the book explores this idea of youth and is the result of nearly two years of photographing of the French model, who has appeared in Another Man himself and walked for Prada, Saint Laurent and Fendi, among others.
Schorr originally met Hameline, a friend of a friend, at a ‘go-see’ at her home in New York City in 2015. The pair ended up spending more time together – Hameline’s home in the Marais is close to the hotel that Schorr stays in when she’s in Paris – which eventually culminated in this project.
“The idea was for Paul and Collier to experience photography as a social space,” says the book’s publisher MACK, “a conversation in which his body and her eyes could try and understand each other’s fascinations and fantasies.”
The process of creating Paul’s Book was intimate and the images reflect that – not just in Paul’s nudity but the places Schorr photographs him in, such as his home and his bed. It’s a beautiful document of one photographer’s relationship with her model or muse.
Paul’s Book by Collier Schorr is published by MACK. IDEA is hosting a launch and signing of the book today at Dover Street Market London.
