Introducing Another Man issue 29, featuring 21 Savage, Victor Polster, Luchino Visconti, Clare Waight Keller and Peter Berlin
- TextAnother Man
1. 2019 started well enough for Atlantan superstar 21 Savage with his sophomore album at the top spot of the Billboard 200. Two months later he was arrested by ICA as an illegal alien and incarcerated, forcing him to miss a headline performance at the Grammy awards. Still on bail but back on the road and in the studio, the 26-year-old is a changed man. Guarded, subdued and definitely not in a hurry to pick up the phone, the rapper speaks to Thomas Gorton who asks, ‘Has trap’s firebrand been dimmed?’ 21 Savage is photographed in Atlanta by Harley Weir, and styled by Another Man fashion director Ellie Grace Cumming.
2. Serendipity helped Victor Polster spring to fame as a teenage trans ballerina in Girl. His tender portrayal of a conflicted soul won him an award at Cannes and a fast-track to screen stardom. Unfazed, he went straight back to dance school. Speaking to Cath Clark, the 17-year-old looks ahead to a lifetime of performing without boundaries. Victor is photographed by Willy Vanderperre and styled by Katy England.
3. Preview Givenchy’s A/W19 collection in Florence, where photographer Daniel Rivera and Ellie Grace Cumming shoot amid the city’s architectural and sculptural gems. Plus, artistic director Clare Waight Keller speaks to Alexander Fury about her choice to show in the Tuscan town.
4. Indulge in a fashion spectacular courtesy of the inimitable Paolo Roversi and stylist Jacob K, who conjure up a dramatic and darkly romantic vision.
5. Transport yourself to the Drakensbergen or ‘Mountain of Dragons’ in South Africa, where photographer Kristin Lee Moolman and Ellie Grace Cumming envision an elegant story on a cast of local models.
6. Read Tim Blanks’ essay ‘Perennial Realms of History’, in which he goes in search of a happy ending, from man’s first fictions and today’s post-truth nightmares to the fantastic fables of sci-fi.
7. Have a Yellow Submarine flashback with fashion’s messenger of love Stella McCartney, who calls on the album’s message of love for a new fashion collection.
8. Take a deep dive into the beautifully bound archives of film maestro Luchino Visconti and slip into a yesteryear of Baroque opulence, tawdry gossip and enduring romance.
9. Eavesdrop on a two-hour, blisteringly frank and, at times, triple X-rated telephone conversation with the 70s pioneer of sexed-up selfies, Peter Berlin.
10. Step inside the 19th-century world of David McDermott and Peter McGough, who speak to Ben Cobb about the time-travelling, life-affirming images they created out of the rubble of 1980s New York.
Another Man A/W19 ‘Present Histories’ is on sale worldwide from September 26, 2019.
