Pieter Hugo’s Visceral Mexico-Shot Series Is Coming To London
- TextOrla Brennan
Opening at London’s Huxley-Parlour Gallery next month, Another Man contributor Pieter Hugo’s series La Cucaracha is making its UK debut. Shot in Mexico over the course of four trips, La Cucaracha explores the universal themes of death, sexuality and spirituality in Mexico, capturing locals from all walks of life and all over the country, from the industrialised zone of Mexico City to the desert of Hermosillo. The result is a confrontational portrait of the region comprising individual portraits, vibrant and visceral landscapes, interior studies and still lifes. “Alongside the flamboyance and high-pitched register of this series, there is the ordinariness of the everyday,” Hugo says. “I am drawn to the fabulousness of the banal and the banality of the exotic.” This Spring, La Cucaracha will also be released as a limited-edition monograph, published by RM Editions. Read our interview with the photographer here, in which he discusses nudes, why he’s comfortable in his own skin and the remarkable series in depth.
Pieter Hugo: La Cucaracha is at Huxley-Parlour, London, from February 19 – March 14, 2020.
