Photographed by Pieter Hugo for Another Man S/S19, Beyond the Horizon captures 7 Moncler Fragment Hiroshi Fujiwara on the outer space-like beaches of the Canary Islands

“Moncler Genius is the opportunity to mix different identities into a new one,“ says Hiroshi Fujiwara of his second collaboration with the luxury Italian outerwear brand, under his label Fragment. The Moncler Genius project launched in February 2018, as a groundbreaking initiative by Remo Ruffini, inviting multiple creative directors to produce eight collections reinterpreting the codes of the Moncler down jacket via their own design signatures.
Japanese streetwear legend Fujiwara – or, ‘the godfather of Ura-Harajuku fashion’ as he is often known – joined ranks with the likes of Pierpaolo Piccioli, Craig Green, Simone Rocha and Noir Kei Ninomiya, among others, with the resulting work unveiled over Milan Fashion Week A/W18. “It allowed me to test solutions and materials I have never used. The result is an unreleased Hiroshi, but it is also an unreleased Moncler,” comments Fujiwara.
The following season, Moncler Genius debuted its sophomore collections – including a new offering from Fragment Hiroshi Fujiwara, which was shot by Pieter Hugo and styled by Ellie Grace Cumming for Another Man’s S/S19 issue. “The issue is called Hello World, so I wanted a location for this shoot that looked like somewhere out of space, or the rocky surface of the moon – somewhere that looked almost like nowhere at all,” says Cumming, with the final editorial fittingly named Edge of The Horizon. “We discussed the volcanic sands of Canary Islands, and ultimately decided on Tenerife.”
The six-page shoot reflects the sentiment of Fragment Hiroshi Fujiwara’s designs for Moncler Genius The Next Chapter, which draws upon ideas of music, travel and exploration of new terrains. Fabrics were developed to be extremely lightweight, with functional jackets, trousers and technical wardrobe staples easily folded into a suitcase or a 7 Moncler Fragment Hiroshi Fujiwara backpack. Such pieces were worn by Korean model An Hui for Edge of The Horizon, cast by London-based agency Troy. “We know Hiroshi is very influenced by music so wanted to include a punk element too,” continues Cumming. “I wanted An Hui to be a bit more cyberpunk, so we had his hair coloured neon-gothic Sisters of Mercy green.”
