George Michael’s Private Art Collection Is up for Auction
- TextAnother Man
Two years after George Michael’s passing, his private art collection is the focus of a London auction. The singer invested in works by some of contemporary art’s biggest names – among them: Bridget Riley, Gilbert & George, Harland Miller, Damien Hirst, and Chris Ofili – and Christie’s is exhibiting and selling the 200-strong collection from today. Michael developed a dialogue with the YBA generation from the 1990s, and bought some of the group’s most recognisable works: a Sarah Lucas self-portrait, a Tracey Emin neon, and one of Hirst’s infamous formaldehyde pieces. Michael was a generous supporter of numerous charitable causes like Childline, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Terrence Higgins Trust; in the same vein, proceeds from The George Michael Collection will be used to continue this philanthropy in his name.
The George Michael Collection online auction runs from March 8 – 15, and the evening auction is on March 14, 2019, at Christie’s London.
