A Documentary Chronicling Ralph Lauren’s Remarkable Life Premieres Today

Over the course of his six decade-long career, Ralph Lauren has become synonymous with American fashion. A new HBO documentary tells Lauren’s remarkable story, tracing his journey from a boy from the Bronx to the man behind one of the world’s most successful fashion empires. Directed by Susan Lacy, Very Ralph sees Lauren reflect on his childhood, life and career in the first ever documentary portrait of the legendary designer. Lauren’s first foray into fashion was working as a tie salesman at New York department store Alexander’s during high school, continuing later at Beau Brummell, where he launched his own line of ties. 1968 saw the launch of inaugural menswear line Polo – the ubiquitous Polo player insignia would appear a few years later, in 1971 – and Lauren’s eponymous brand has grown from there, championing an all-American aesthetic ever since. Over the course of more than 50 years Ralph Lauren has seen stratospheric success, and Very Ralph charts the rise of the brand via its namesake designer, with input from the likes of Anna Wintour and Jessica Chastain. Very Ralph will be broadcast in the UK on Sky Atlantic tonight at 9pm, and is also available to stream via NOW TV.
