Glamour. An often bandied about word, but rarely realised in a real, authentic way. Especially in men’s fashion. But it’s here in spades in Alexander McQueen’s A/W19 menswear collection, captured by photographer Ethan James Green and the house’s menswear stylist and consultant and Another Man’s creative director Alister Mackie. This season, Sarah Burton looked to the north of England; to Northern Soul; to factories, steelworks and docks; to New Wave, New Order, Joy Division and The Smiths; to the sense of pride with which people dress there, and the sense of grittiness, too. The glamour of this collection is especially felt in the chandelier crystal embroideries on tuxedo jackets, which take inspiration from the 1950s ballroom. Elsewhere, wool, cashmere, pinstripe, Prince of Wales and houndstooth check collide with floral wool silk jacquard, leather, and silk – all this, in hues of powder pink, ballroom blue, dahlia, stone, black, white, and deep red. Imbued with a sense of English romanticism – a signature of McQueen’s, and indeed Burton’s – this collection is a refreshing antidote to the casual luxury dominating men’s fashion at the moment. It is truly and brilliantly glamorous.
